I remember a thousand years ago when it was especially hot, my Pop would head out the door, likely to run to the station in a mode of transportation that likely had no air conditioning. Which was actually a blessing since he was likely headed to the station for cigs. He would say, “Grube, wanna go?” And when he said, “Grube, wanna go?” the answer is YES. Because going somewhere alone with Daddy was rare and it meant you got a goody at the station.
Now there were no shortage of goodies on the weekend with Gran, but weekdays a goody was a rarity. The answer is YES. We would jump in the hot ride, not to be confused with the hot rod…mama drove that…and made our way to the nearest station where I would choose a Mickey Mouse bar with ears. I don’t remember what it tasted like. I’m certain it was delicious but I do remember the way it felt to be the only one with him on that trip on that day, every time I got to go.
Chosen.
I felt chosen. For the entire ride and way home, in my mind, I was the only thing that mattered to him. And it felt DELICIOUS.
There were many other rides with my dad that didn’t go well at all. My blueberry scented doll with a cigarette burn in her apron from a runaway ash, window cracked an inch in a car filled with toxins, lights and sirens, scared and screeching mama and plenty of other road wrongs. Jesus take the wheel. Most rides with Dad involved no comfort or safety, but the goody rides, they were different.
I knew then what I know now. I AM CHOSEN. You are too…
if you say yes.
“As high as heaven is over the earth, so strong is his love to those who fear him.” Psalm 103:16ish MSG
See?
No?
“Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience.” Col 3:12 NIV
Believe me now?
“Ye have not chosen me, but I have chosen you, and ordained you…” John 15:16a KJV
Surely…
You see every ride, step, breath you take you are chosen by God. He chose you and He’s waiting on you to say yes.
“Jennifer, wanna go?”,
YES, Daddy, a million times, YES.
-Mama sewed a blueberry patch over the burn on the dolly dress and she looked even cuter than before. I know you were wondering what happened to her.
Dedicated to Jeba-Jeep and Gobba. All my love, Gruber
